An Urban Oasis
At the foot of the Petronas Twin Towers lies one of Kuala Lumpur's most beloved public spaces: KLCC Park. This 50-acre (20-hectare) urban park provides a dramatic counterpoint to the soaring towers above, offering locals and visitors alike a green retreat in the heart of one of Southeast Asia's most dynamic cities.
The park was designed by the internationally renowned Brazilian landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx, whose work is celebrated for its bold use of native plants, organic forms, and integration of art with nature. For the KLCC Park, Burle Marx created a design that incorporates over 1,900 indigenous trees, native plants, tropical palms, and flowering shrubs — a living showcase of Malaysia's extraordinary botanical diversity.
Lake Symphony
The crown jewel of KLCC Park is the Lake Symphony, a man-made lake featuring an elaborate water fountain and light show. Every evening beginning at around 8:00 PM (and running at intervals until 10:00 PM), the Lake Symphony comes alive with synchronised water jets, coloured lights, and music — creating a spectacular display that draws crowds of thousands.
The fountain system includes dozens of water jets capable of propelling water up to 42 metres in the air. The choreography of water and light is set to a varied musical programme, ranging from classical pieces to contemporary Malaysian music. Against the backdrop of the illuminated twin towers, the Lake Symphony show is one of the most photographed scenes in Kuala Lumpur.
Park Facilities
KLCC Park offers a comprehensive range of recreational facilities:
- Jogging Track: A 1.3-kilometre rubberised jogging track winds through the park, popular with runners from early morning until late evening
- Children's Playground: A well-equipped playground area with climbing structures, slides, and play equipment
- Wading Pool: A shallow children's swimming pool that provides welcome relief from Kuala Lumpur's tropical heat
- Walking Paths: Landscaped pathways throughout the park, ideal for leisurely strolls and photography
- Sculpture Garden: Several art installations and sculptures are positioned throughout the grounds
Nature in the City
Despite its urban setting, KLCC Park supports a surprising diversity of wildlife. Bird watchers can spot species including mynas, sunbirds, and kingfishers. The park's pond system supports turtles and various fish species, while the extensive plantings attract butterflies and insects that would normally be found only in wilder settings.
The park's environmental design includes a sophisticated rainwater management system that collects and recycles rainwater for irrigation, reducing the demand on municipal water supplies. This ecological approach was ahead of its time when the park opened in 1998 and reflects the broader sustainability ethos of the KLCC development.
Visiting Tips
KLCC Park is open daily from 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM and is free to enter. The best times to visit are early morning (for jogging and cool temperatures), late afternoon (for photography in golden light), and evening (for the Lake Symphony show). The park is directly accessible from Suria KLCC mall and is a short walk from the KLCC LRT station.
