The Observation Deck

Panoramic views from 370 metres above Kuala Lumpur

The View from the Top

Rising 370 metres (1,210 feet) above the bustling streets of Kuala Lumpur, the Petronas Twin Towers Observation Deck on the 86th floor offers one of the most spectacular panoramic views in Southeast Asia. From this vantage point, visitors can see the entire Kuala Lumpur metropolitan area spread out below them, with landmarks, neighbourhoods, and distant mountains all visible on a clear day.

The observation deck occupies the 86th floor of Tower 2 and provides a 360-degree view through floor-to-ceiling glass panels. On clear days, visibility extends to the Titiwangsa mountain range and beyond, offering a perspective on Malaysia's geography that is impossible to appreciate from ground level.

What You'll See

The Kuala Lumpur skyline unfolds in every direction from the observation deck. To the east, you can spot the distinctive KL Tower (Menara Kuala Lumpur), standing proudly on Bukit Nanas hill. To the south, the rapidly developing areas of Bangsar and Mid Valley stretch toward the horizon. The northern vista reveals the older parts of the city, while the western view encompasses the lush green corridor of the Federal Hill area.

Directly below, the KLCC Park appears as a green oasis amid the urban landscape, with the Lake Symphony fountain visible as a sparkling jewel at its centre. The geometric layout of the park, designed by Brazilian landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx, is best appreciated from this elevated perspective.

Interactive Displays

The observation deck features more than just views. Interactive displays and informational panels provide context for what visitors are seeing, identifying landmarks and explaining the history of Kuala Lumpur's development. Glass-encased models of the Petronas Twin Towers allow visitors to examine the building's structure in detail, while multimedia presentations share the story of the towers' construction.

Telescopes positioned around the deck allow visitors to zoom in on specific landmarks and neighborhoods, bringing distant details into sharp focus. These are particularly popular with photography enthusiasts seeking to identify specific buildings and sites.

The Journey Up

The experience of reaching the observation deck is itself remarkable. After visiting the 41st-floor Skybridge, visitors take a high-speed elevator that ascends to the 86th floor in approximately 90 seconds. The elevator's speed — reaching up to 7 metres per second — creates a noticeable sensation of acceleration, adding to the excitement of the ascent.

Some tours include a brief stop on the 83rd floor, which offers additional viewing opportunities and display areas before the final ascent to the observation deck.

Timing Your Visit

The quality of the observation deck experience depends significantly on timing. Morning visits (9:00–11:00 AM) typically offer the clearest skies, as tropical haze tends to build during the afternoon. However, late afternoon visits (4:00–6:00 PM) can provide spectacular sunset views, with the city transforming from daylight brightness to the warm glow of golden hour.

Evening visits are particularly popular, allowing visitors to see the city transition from daylight to the glittering spectacle of nighttime illumination. The city lights create a dramatic contrast with the dark sky, and the evening Lake Symphony fountain show in KLCC Park below adds a magical element to the experience.

Accessibility

The observation deck is wheelchair accessible, with lifts and ramps available throughout the visitor journey. Complimentary wheelchairs are available on a first-come, first-served basis. The deck's floor-to-ceiling glass panels ensure that views are accessible from a seated position, and staff members are available to assist visitors with special needs.
