Why Night Photography?
The Petronas Twin Towers are stunning at any time of day, but they are truly transcendent at night. When the 33,000 stainless steel panels and 55,000 glass panels catch the glow of the building's sophisticated lighting system, the towers transform from an impressive structure into a luminous sculpture that seems to float above the city. For photographers, this transformation creates opportunities for images that are impossible to capture during daylight hours.
Night photography of the towers has become a genre unto itself, with photographers from around the world travelling to Kuala Lumpur specifically to capture the towers in their illuminated glory. Whether you're shooting with a professional DSLR or a smartphone, this guide will help you find the best locations and settings for unforgettable images.
Best Vantage Points
KLCC Park (Ground Level): The classic postcard view of the towers is captured from the walking paths in KLCC Park, particularly from the area near the Lake Symphony fountain. This angle provides a frontal view of both towers with the skybridge centred between them. During the fountain show, the combination of water, light, and the illuminated towers creates a magical composition.
Traders Hotel SkyBar: Located on the 33rd floor of the Traders Hotel adjacent to the KLCC complex, SkyBar offers an elevated side view of the towers. The infinity pool in the foreground creates opportunities for dramatic reflection shots. Arrive before sunset to secure a good position.
Saloma Link Bridge: This pedestrian bridge, located about 1 kilometre from the towers, provides a unique perspective with the towers framed against the broader Kuala Lumpur skyline. The bridge itself is illuminated at night, adding an architectural element to the foreground.
Jalan P. Ramlee: The streets immediately surrounding the KLCC development offer various angles for street-level shots that include the towers rising above the city's nightlife district.
Camera Settings Guide
For optimal night shots of the towers, consider these starting settings:
- Aperture: f/8–f/11 for maximum sharpness across the frame
- ISO: 100–400 (lower is better for noise reduction)
- Shutter Speed: 2–15 seconds depending on desired effect (longer for light trails, shorter for sharper details)
- White Balance: Tungsten or around 3200K for a cooler look; daylight for warmer tones
- Focus: Manual focus to infinity, or autofocus on the towers and then switch to manual
A sturdy tripod is essential for sharp long-exposure shots. A remote shutter release or the camera's built-in timer will help prevent camera shake.
Timing Is Everything
The "blue hour" — the period approximately 20–40 minutes after sunset — offers the most dramatic conditions for tower photography. During this window, the sky retains a deep blue colour that provides a beautiful backdrop for the illuminated towers. Once the sky turns completely black, you lose this atmospheric quality and the image becomes more stark.
The Lake Symphony fountain show begins at approximately 8:00 PM nightly and runs at intervals until 10:00 PM. Time your KLCC Park photography to coincide with these shows for the most dynamic compositions.
Smartphone Photography Tips
Modern smartphones are surprisingly capable for night photography. Enable night mode if available, and stabilize your phone against a railing or post for sharper results. Many smartphones offer manual exposure controls in their camera apps — use these to set longer exposures for better light capture.
For the best smartphone results, shoot during the blue hour rather than in complete darkness. The additional ambient light helps smartphone sensors produce cleaner images with less noise.
